Family of the Year

In conjunction with Parent & Family Weekend, the University of Utah honors one of its families as Family of the Year. All families that include a current undergraduate student at the U are eligible.

The goal of this award is to honor a family that displays enthusiasm for the University of Utah and supports our University community, such as being a positive mentor for their student or participating in University events. Instead of indicating specific criteria for this award, we want to learn each nominated family's story. Your student will serve as the family's contact person, and the selected family must be able to attend Parent & Family Weekend during the Fall semester.

2008 Family of the year

We are excited to recognize the Ghaibi Family as the University of Utah's 2008 Family of the Year! The Ghaibi Family consists of Hossien and Farah Ghaibi with their three daughters Shadie, Shabnam, and Sheila.  Hossien and Farah moved their family to the United States from Iran in 1986.

Hossien and Farah have encouraged their daughters to be involved academically, in their community, and with service. Shadie and Shabnam currently attend the University of Utah. Shadie has been at the U since her freshman year and is now in the PharmD graduate program. Shabnam is an exercise and sports science major with pre-physician assistant emphasis. The two sisters are also excited for their youngest sister, Sheila, to join them next year at the University of Utah as a pre-law student.

According to Shadie, “My parents have supported us by helping with essentially everything we have been involved with at the University of Utah. As the director of Crimson Nights a few years ago, my family helped participate and clean up after the events. During elections for ASUU, my parents would help us raise money so we could run for assembly and senate. In addition to donating prizes for many campus activities, they have also given up their home for endless University retreats and committee meetings. Their support for this University and their encouragement to always strive for the best have had a huge impact on me and my sisters and we hope to make them proud!”

Please check back in early October for information on the 2010 Family of the Year, which could be YOUR FAMILY!
